Dream quote of the week

Amidst all the propaganda and claptrap concerning Dreamland in our local newspapers this week, I was drawn to a couple of quotations in the Gazette, firstly in the runner up position must be this from Liss Werner who said referring to the plans on show ''it has been fascinating. We have kept a lot of the park's heritage in the names of some of the roads.'' ignoring the fact that both designs will bury Dreamland heritage, forever under a grisley housing development, ignoring the national importance of this site.

Despite the stiff competition however the clear winner has to be architect Chris Levett, who apparently came up with this gem ''I think my client has to be given credit in the efforts he has gone to in keeping the scenic railway in the designs'' , now I might well be mistaken, but I have been under the misapprehension, that the scenic railway has a preservation order, making it a tad difficult for Reading-based owners to do anything else but keep the scenic railway, I know there was a little misunderstanding, concerning the massive steel fence erected by developers without planning permission.

Finally it seems a bit strange that the Gazette, has yet to find any residents who are critical, of both these schemes, on my brief visit to the exhibition, it seemed that no one was that impressed with the Reading firm's plans. Really if this is part of a genuine consultation process, why is there no third alternative, restoration of the theme park, and that I think, is a question that if our local news media were doing their job properly they would be asking.

  1. Bloggers are the local media insofar as local radio and papers will not broadcast or publish the fears and misgivings of local people because they are scared of local businessess who pay to advertise in these mediums.

Dreamland should be brought back to life, and with a little forethought this could and should be incorporated in the new plans for the site.
A smaller traditional theme park could be totally paid for by income generated from development of the remainder of the site,or is that to simple a concept for the planners to grasp.

  2. I wonder also, if either housing scheme goes ahead, how long it would be before the new residents of the estate start moaning about the noise intrusion of the scenic railway and get it shut down. That's always assuming of course, that it lasts the move in position anyway!

  3. Full page adverts for months on end from Waterbridge is a big inducement to keep the Gazunder on side.
My understanding is that Waterbridge intend to put a high building behind the back of Marine Terrace that will overlook the Georgian frontages to give sea-views; how cynical and intrusive aa it would then dominate a protected Georgian frontage. On the subject of Godden's Gap, would I be correct in thinking that this is shown on the designs as integral access off Marine Terrace?

A few years ago a mother was charged with the cot death of a second child simply on the grounds of PROBABILITY i.e. an expert said that the chances of two such deaths being natural were so great that the deaths must be viewed as murder. She received a prison sentence but has since been released as a miscarriage of justice took place.

I am fascinated by the unfortunate fires that have ocurred to various properties over the years. Are there experts in the fire investigation departments of big insurance companies who might be able to provide data on PROBABILITY in respect to one person having a series of unfortunate fires.

They say 'every cloud has a silver lining' and the smoke cloud over Marine Terrace seems to have had one as it reduced part of a protected frontage to rubble and possibly made a convenient access gap to a proposed multi-million pound development.

  4. Well we seam to have forgotten a point or two.
First, in the 60's and 70's air travel got much cheaper assisted by package tours. This resulted in the Great British public getting used to sun, sangrea, and en-suite accommodation.

Result- B&B with en-suite facilities non existant, Sun, almost the same, and prices through the roof, not very attractive.

Today we have additional factors, Places like Alton Towers/Lego Land/ Chessington etc.

They have the advantages of size and investment.

The various owners of dreamland seem to me, to have done what the B&B owners did inthe 60's Fail to invest, but take what was left. (I may be wrong).

We have to re-invent our resorts, not continue to try to return to the past, it has gone!

  5. I've spent quite a while chatting with a good friend about the local newspapers and how there are very limited options to reply to articles, bar one page of 'letters'.

I would ideally like to see the newpaper put their content online enabling unlimited commentors to each article.

The articles could be uploaded a week after the printed edition to limit damages to sales.

There is no real technical problem to doing such a thing, but my friend has had no reply yet to the emails he has sent.

At the moment the only place to find genuine local views is on the blogs (small plug here to theThanet Blog List

  7. I think it is safe to say that, many local people regard, the Thanet blog list as their first port of call, for local news that is a course after Bignews Margate, you're right Adem, the publishers of the Gazette and Thanet Times must be missing quite a bit of revenue from online advertising. Something which the Kent Messenger Group haven't ignored.

To the anonymous contributor 06: 13 PM, I have a deleted your comment, since it may well have been misunderstood.
