Northdown Coach House 25 years in the doldrums

Back in 1985 the Coach House at Northdown Park, was leased at an annual rent of 300 quid, in that period little seems to have gone on at the property, which at the time, the lease was arranged, was to have been used as a museum, this never happened.

In fact little seems to have happened, apart from the building deteriorating, last summer, someone pointed out to me that vandals had apparently removed the guttering and now it is boarded up.

Now after 25 years of apparent inactivity it seems Thanet council are finally showing an interest in the state of the building but only as an asset that somehow they might generate income from.

Anyway TDC seems once again oblivious to the fact that use of this building is constrained by covenants and the rest of Northdown Park Estate. Lets hope TDC can sort this out before this building is further damaged.

see below an extract from a document prepared for the Asset Management Working Group.

Should the coach house open up as a museum, I will definately offer all the resources at my disposal towards the project as a volunteer.

A flat for the curator with no museum! Almost as good as TC staffing for past 10 years for no gallery. Gotta larf! How much rent was the curator paying the tenant until 2008?

What a shame!
Thanet District Council should make available the opportunity to have this beautiful building repaired and renovated.....a museum sound a great idea

What you havent mentioned is that the leaseholder is a "senior south thanet conservative party officer" proposed the 3 Cliftonville east tories including the leader and is the Conservative candidate for South Thanet's chief publicity officer ...and still wants to be paid to leave a property where he hasnt kept up the maintenance requirements! Looks to my mind like a Conspiracy! Also formally forced to pay damages to a fellow former conservative when he settled out of court ! That is the type of character at the heart of the Conservatives in South Thanet!Good luck to them!

It is almost a year since the last comment on this property. I am a daily visitor to this place, and would ask, who are the people currently occupying the house, and what is their standing regarding tenancy etc. Externally the place is still an unsightly blot on the park.

The best idea was to sell off this place to someone who could afford to maintain it to the standard its iconic status demands. That was opposed by Labour and a local campaign group.

The truth is that TDC simply do not have the money to look after the host of historic buildings on their books, but let us see if the new Labour cabinet can make any difference. I will not be holding my breath.
