I must say this item in todays i newspaper, I found quite a surprise, basically it reports that Palestinians have lost faith in Tony Blair's role as Middle East peace broker.
It's touching that long suffering Palestinians, ever did trust him.
Back in 1967, Israel did quite rightly what it had to, in order to protect itself, forty years later there is no excuse for them to hold onto land taken then.
Palestine also has a right to exist, as much as any nation, it's not good enough that America and her allies assist Israel's long term strategy, which is to hang on to the occupied lands, and imprison the people of Palestine.
Apparently Blair doesn't agree with Palestine's demand to be recognised, an odd position to take from the man who gave Scotland and Wales their own assemblies, which if it isn't already seen as such, will one day be noted as the pivotal point in the break up of the United Kingdom.
The thing about Tony Blair is he seeks approval from those he sees as more powerful than he, which goes a long way to explain Iraq, Afghanistan, his upgrade in religious affiliations and did I hear-right godfather to one of the Murdoch's.
I understand why some sections of the Labour party admire him having been the only successful Labour leader in recent times, pity he didn't look to have much time for social justice.
The Middle East needs a fair minded strong individual with the balls to stand up for what's right.
I am sure many will agree with your analysis and expressed dislike of Tony Blair. Picking up, though, on the fundamental issue here - the Israel/Palestine conflict - I think the reason why many are disinclined to support the Palestinians' bid for statehood recognition in the UN is because they continue to reject israel's right to exist and will not refrain from attacking the country.
ReplyDeleteYou may well be right that Israel cannot justify holding on to land captured in 1967, but sadly little has changed in the Arab attitudes locally since then. Israel will argue that without such a change, they cannot be expected to make the first move.
A sad stalemate which needs continued effort to break.
Israel has sought to destroy the Palestinians, using any means, often resorting to war crimes which are then justified by Israel who often plays the victim.
ReplyDeleteHow they can justify murdering UN observers, civilians, destroying homes, stealing property, attacking schools refusing medicines

ReplyDeleteSeem to recall back in '97 a lot of folk in this country thought Tony Blair and New Labour were the new beginning. Bit like the guy on the other side of the pond I suppose.
ReplyDeleteDon't really think we can knock him on the Mid-East role though because that problem goes way back. The British tried after WWII to stop the two sides killing each other to no avail and lost quite a few troops in the process.
Guess the state of Israel, largely pushed through the UN by the then powerful USA, was not really thought through and there should have been proper safeguards for both Arabs and Jews from the outset.
Whatever Tony Blair may or may not have done for progress many others have failed before him and just how many Camp David peace conferences have there been.
Robert Jones, try standing on your head whilst you garlge with ice cold water.
ReplyDeleteWhen is this vile little toad going to get the message. He is not welcome... ANYWHERE!
ReplyDeleteWhy suddenly bring Roger Gale into the discussion?
ReplyDeleteWhat a wit you are, 11:57, or perhaps there should be a 't' in front of the 'w'.
ReplyDeleteOnly, 11.13, on the same basis as there should, perhaps, be a "w" in front of your being described as an "anchor" in the debate. And of course you have to tweak the spelling...
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should call this one a draw as well! See you at the Broadstairs Food Fayre tomorrow?
