Labour councillor in cheap and prejudicial shot ?

It’s my own view but I get the impression from Cllr Mark Nottingham latest posting that he is pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable comment.

Most of us are familiar with allegations made and the legal process involving a leading member of Thanet’s Conservative party and Nottingham’s current blog post seems to connect that in some rather contrived way with Labour policy although in fairness, its also the case that yesterdays Thanet Times also seemed to be indulge in over reporting the case.

The media in general have pushed the boundaries of reporting in high profile cases to a degree which thirty years ago would have been I feel unacceptable and which often looks prejudicial.

As we all know Labour are having a miserable time in the Dane Valley By-election, battling against a background of Labour sleaze and betrayal of ordinary people by Labour’s leaders, who’ve favoured bankers and corporations in recent times, I’d image Clive Hart’s Labour group could do their candidate a favour if they concentrated on telling potential voters what if anything, they could offer locally rather than taking cheap shots at political opponents.

Still you can form your own opinion by reading Cllr Nottinghams blog here and whilst you do so, its also worth remembering that he is a professional Labour eEurocrat politician working for MEP Mary Honeyball (no I’ve never come across her either) funded by us taxpayers.

  1. Isn't there also something going on, allegdedly, with the Mayor of Margate and a cat?

  2. I think you'll find that's what Tony is referring to, Jeremy. A big splash in the local press as the Mayor is taken to court on animal cruelty charges. Conveniently the case has been moved to the Medway Court to avoid too much coverage here. Bit late in the day for that. Bad decision, I think, as it would all be over and done with by now rather than dragged out for more adverse publicity. I assume a local reporter there will attend and inform his/her colleagues in Thanet of the outcome.

Tony, you haven't taken Bertie Biggles to task and it was he who broke the story last Thursday.

Tony, are you so sure the Labour candidate is having a bad time campaigning? My observations are the opposite and it's likely to be the Tory candidate who, so far, hasn't done any door-stepping unless you know differently. No-one I've come across has heard anything from the Tory candidate to date although the Lib. Dem. whom I assume you are supporting, has certainly been very busy.

  3. I'm a Dane Valley voter and will be voting for the best candidate, whom I don't think will be coming from Labour or the Tories.

I must say from where I'm sitting their has only one contender and this is likely to be the case.

So far I can tell Labour have been late out of the starting gate.

In the last election the first time I received an election communication was about a couple of hours after I'd cast my first vote such was the arrogance of Margate Labour, no surprise the lost two seats and failed to gain the other.

  4. Jeremy

As a believer in the judicial system I feel comment about alleged incidents should remain where they belong, in court, not partial points scoring.

    Mr Puss agrees!

  5. Looks like TDC's protocol for its councilors has done the trick!

  6. Seems Labour leader Clive Hart is putting in a lot of effort in to getting Mrs Hart elected.

  7. (1) 1996 three articles published in Searchlight magazine. Alleging throughporting of mercenaries at Ramsgate. Thanet Times coverage ? To report that Searchlight was considerted gullible for a good story ?

    (2) Some years later a warrant raid at Southwood Ramsgate seized suspected illegal guns and ammo. Thanet Times report rested on explanation of those raided (how did the editor know them and what steps did he take to corroborate their story before publishing it ?)

    (3) Press reports by Thanet Police Chief after Pc Odell was run over ... immediately claimed that the officer had been wearing a hi viz vest and gave a speed of the car which was if I recall about 30 mph higher than the figure given in evidence.

    (4) A Thanet Times report "My prison hell accused of rape" sympathizing with a local man. No mention of the inquiry into fraudulent bail which had secured his release and allowed him access to his alleged victim without police knowledge. No mention of whether this was a factor in charges being dropped. No mention of the role a local prominent solicitor and Greek businessman had played in posting false bail to get a release ordered by a Judge from remand. No mention of investigation into Thanet police not knowing he was out or of responding to a call for help that it could not be him as he was in Canterbury prison and on that erroneous basis refusing to respond to the emergency call for help.

Thanet is the home of prejudicial reporting. In the past it has tended to favour those acquaintances favoured by the editor.

  8. As you are the proposer and I assume agent for the Lib. Dem. candidate don't you have to be a bit careful now the election is up and running? Aren't there rules about promoting candidates and declaring an interest.

I see Bill Furness is very sure of victory as one of his leaflets says he's a 'shoe-in for the seat' or words to that effect. We'll have to see.

I dispute your comment about Labour being late with this one as you know perfectly well leaflets went out during the August Bank Holiday referencing an imminent by-election. Hardly sounds like they were a bit late. At that point, unless you know different, no-one else had put out any leaflets on this theme.

Don't try to say you didn't get a leaflet as I personally have leafleted your house twice and someone else did the first one and you've been canvassed recently although you weren't at home.

Someone else, I assume Mrs. Flaig, answered to say you weren't at home.

Let's stick to the facts, Tony.It was the Labour Party campaigning to get the Tories to see sense and persuade Panama Steve to resign that has caused this by-election.

  9. Assuming Labour campaigner is also one and the same as Clive Hart, if so odd that you'd use a pseudonym, anyhow

I think you will find that Bignews Margate also campaigned to have the absent Cllr Broadhurst resign.

Sticking to the facts and not getting into a trivial my campaign was bigger than yours. I think my discovery that Cllr Broadhurst had been mysteriously signed in or whatever might well have actually been the tipping point for our man in Panama.

  10. Apology please Tony! Comment from Labour campaigner earlier certainly was not me. As a councillor and the Labour Group Leader I use my name if I comment. And I don't know where you get your info from but the campaign is going very well indeed thanks - really enjoying this one.

  12. Clive as I understand you called at my home, at this point, I am only aware of yourself having called although I understand your wife was in the vicinity.

I suggest that you refer to your email of either 3rd or 4th November

I have checked with my wife and she cannot recall any one calling on behalf of Labour

Still if your passing do nip in you might even get a cup of tea no apology at this vine
