Happy Birthday Turner Contemporary

Although late in opening by a few years, Turner Contemporary has so far proved a success, many of those, who were sceptical have since changed their minds, myself included. Put on the spot by a journalist last friday, I couldn't find anything to fault the establishment so far, and I couldn't think of anyone of consequence, who'd have anything much to criticise this little gem of culture and civilisation.

Anyhow last years opening, certainly gave the town a lift in contrast an otherwise bleak background, one thing that impressed me was the positive atmosphere and genuine pleasure of those present at the big opening, oh and the weather was a bit warmer than this year.

I hope those in charge continue to deliver goods after what has been an outstanding first year, and I also hope they take into account mainstream taste. Anyway here are some photos from last year!

  1. Are people of no consequence not allowed an opinion?

  3. You wrote: "...I couldn't think of anyone of consequence, who'd have anything much to criticise." What are the qualifications to become a "person of consequence"?

  5. Sorry 9 55 I have to fess up on this one in responding to your comment I hadn't read my own post, still now that I have a person of consequence is generally accepted to be some who effects a change, someone who is influential.

Thank you a valued contribution even if a bit picky,of course at the end of the dayevery one of us is of consequence including yourself.

Breathing is therefore the main criteria of being of consequence.

  6. I think Thanet folk must be just about the touchiest people in the country.

Turner's the best thing that ever happened to Thanet in years. Even if it looks like a shed!

  7. So with regeneration being the object, tell us Tony how many new jobs have been created with the £16millions costs and £2 millions a years running costs?

FFS it's only been open a year! Do you think Margate is suddenly going to become a jobs hotspot? Especially the way the Economy has been over the past year: haven't you heard, we've had a bit of a downturn.

Don't worry, the annual funding isn't going to come out of the pockets of art haters like you.

  9. It would not come out of his pockets anyway because he's on benifits. Mind you, he has hopes of stardom on the Jeremy Kyle show.

  10. Yikes, with that spelling of benefits I might even be on the show with him.

  11. The money put into this is better spent here than up north of london as is generally the case.

Several businesses have opened the Old Town is now coming to life

What a sad outlook you must have 3 49.

Billions have been spent on the olympics, and as someone who's familiar with both hackney & stratford, I'd say Margate is doing better than those areas

  12. Anon 5.10 since you dont know where the money is comming from I will tell you. £1.5 millions a year from the kind council tax payers of KCC and £.5 millions a year from central government via the Arts Council. KCC have a duty to ensure that their taxpayers are getting value for money. A few new businesses in the Old Town dont demonstrate that.
It seems to me if there have been 500,000 visitors then they have not spent a lot in Margate.
